It started as a travel journal
This site started in 2006 of our experiences migrating to New Zealand. We had many adventures traveling and working in the country. Check it out, it’s pretty funny what happened to us. I’d suggest reading it from oldest to newest, and that’s why the link goes to page 3.
Then it got to be about work
When I started working over there, my former boss suggested that I write about the experiences at work. It was my first attempt to formerly convert an organization to use Scrum. His thought was, that if I captured what I was learning, it might come off as a humble alternative to all the expert opinions about how Agile “should” be done.
While I tried to keep the posts to experiences as observations and without judgement, sometimes I’d stray, and become opinionated. At other times, I’ve written down information only. It wasn’t my intent to be so prescriptive and yet, some of those posts are the most popular on the site.
And went through a bit of neglect
What’s a guy to do? I employed one of my favorite tactics, ignore it. Facebook and Twitter were becoming more popular. They were taking my attention and at the same time, I was getting a little turned off by the rampant self-promotion and public displays of narcissism I saw there. Thinking about “branding” myself makes me feel like an object, not a person.
It’s about discussing things in my life that are important to me
I’ve decided lately to put a little more effort in to it. I would like to write about things that I’ve done and communicate what I see happening. Not as much what I might do or how I think it should be, but what is happening in the world around me. I’d like to connect with other people and participate in conversation.
Which is more than work
When I started, it was a little one-sided. Mostly about Agile and work. I’ve really struggled with that. I understand for a blog to be well-read, it should stick to a single message. I’d like to write about more than that. Let me know what you think and I invite you to leave comments, if it appeals to you. Maybe then it can become a way for us to get to know each other a little better.
Thanks for reading,
